TACS High School Sailing Team

The TACS Board of Directors have approved the formation of a Traverse Area Comunity Sailing high School racing program. This idea was brought to TACS by parents interested in having their sons and daughters compete at the high school level.:

What is High School Sailing?

High school sailing competitions are sailed under the auspices of the Interscholastic Sailing Association. There are about 230 high school sailing teams across the country, sailing in regional regattas and eventually national events. The Mid-West Region (MidWest Inter Scholastic Sailing Association) hosts regattas in Holland, Chicago, Milwaukee and Detroit. You can see the 2008 Mid West Region schedule here.

Eligibility starts in the 9th grade, there are no specific age limits. This program will be for experienced sailors and we would assume that the student had previous sailing experience through programs such as TACS Advanced Sailing Camp or similar programs from other sailing organizations. 8th Grade students are welcome to particpate in practices with the team but are not eligable to participate in MISSA competion.

What about boats?

High school events use 420's for crewed events and Lasers for single person events (fall Series). TACS has recently purchased 5 420's for use of the High School programs as well as in the youth learn to sail programs. The Hugh School team will train in these 420s and the JY 15s as well as Lasers..

If you or your sailors are interested in participating in a high school sailing program, please contact Sally Rivard or Jim Sorbie.
