TACS High School Sailing Team
The TACS Board of Directors have approved the formation of a Traverse Area Comunity Sailing high School racing program. This idea was brought to TACS by parents interested in having their sons and daughters compete at the high school level.: What is High School Sailing? High school sailing competitions are sailed under the auspices of the Interscholastic Sailing Association. There are about 230 high school sailing teams across the country, sailing in regional regattas and eventually national events. The Mid-West Region (MidWest Inter Scholastic Sailing Association) hosts regattas in Holland, Chicago, Milwaukee and Detroit. You can see the 2008 Mid West Region schedule here. Eligibility starts in the 9th grade, there are no specific age limits. This program will be for experienced sailors and we would assume that the student had previous sailing experience through programs such as TACS Advanced Sailing Camp or similar programs from other sailing organizations. What about boats? High school events use 420's for crewed events (spring series) and Lasers for single person events (fall Series). It is our intent to start the program using lasers only, thus we will paprticipate in the Fall events only, starting in the fall of 2008. TACS has some Lasers available for use, however sailors may use (actually are encouraged to) use their own boats. If there is enough interest for the spring season crewed events, we will try to obtain boats from event hosts while training in TACS JY15's. Interested? If you or your sailors are interested in participating in a high school sailing program, please contact Sally Rivard or Jim Sorbie. We need to know how much interest there may be and we'll need your help (and your voice) to help coordinate with the schools. Latest news: Many thanks to those who attended the introductory meeting on April 18th. We had 20 sailors in attendence (TC central-5, TC West-6, Leland-5, Interlochen-1, Sutton's bay-1, & Glen lake-1). With that much expressed interested we're confident we can go ahead. Arrangements are being made to establish an intial deposit for the season estblish those who will be committed to racing this fall. Stay tuned for more info! In the meantime, we have arranged to have instructors available prior to the Cherry Pit Regatta, to make that event a learning opportunity as well as a competitive event! We urge all of the High School Sailors to take advantage of this as well as other training opportunities (e.g. TACS Advanced Sailing Camp and TACS Summer Racing Team).
